More than a legend, Anansé and the Sun is a little tale about the creation of life.

The tale of Anansé and the Sun

“In those ancient times, the earth was still deserted, rocky and barren. Life had not yet emerged from the vast rivers that ran along the shores of its deserts, from the torrents that rushed down the slopes of its arid mountains, a chaos of shapeless rocks. Only the little spider Anansi wove her web in vain.

From its center, she gazed at the solar star that rose in the distance, on the horizon, high above the hills. Her gaze followed its course until the death of its setting; she trembled with fear seeing it disappear and, all night long, kept watch and prayed in her desire to see it reborn. Her heart vibrated; the sun had become her Beloved. An undying desire to climb up to it made her weave an enormous web between two great rocks. In vain.

She then climbed the hill, weaving her thread to catch the Beloved in her web. Never had she climbed so high! But there, she saw, on the horizon, the peaks of a mountain range at the place where her rising Sun appeared.

What to do? She fastened one end of her thread to the top of the hill, and set off to attach the other end over there, at the very top of the most majestic peak. She did not hesitate for an instant, so much did her heart carry her toward the one she loved. She walked for a long time, climbing rocks, crossing stone deserts, always weaving the thread of her destiny. Far from the land she knew, a river blocked her path, impassable! No, she would not turn back! Love was stronger than anguish; without knowing how to swim, she threw herself into the current that carried her to the opposite shore. The rays of the Beloved sun dried her instantly and she resumed her journey. She reached the coveted summit, exhausted.

She had woven a thread of immeasurable length and when she calculated the dimensions her web would take, she felt dizzy. At that moment, she saw that her ambition was excessive, her love impossible!

Never, never, ever could she catch the Beloved in her web; never, never, ever could she reach the chosen one of her heart. But there, she was closer to him; she decided to stay and contemplate him in his journey longer than in the plain far below.

She spent each night weeping the sorrow of his absence; had he forgotten her? She spent each dawn in the joy of seeing him born. He returned for her! All day long, she followed his slow course with passion until the death of his setting. Time had stopped. She would do nothing else eternally.”

But one morning, a breeze began to blow down in the plain, lifting the desert sand. The breath of wind grew and transformed into a storm. It climbed the hills, the mountain slopes, it reached the summit. The little spider Anansi resisted with all her strength. She did not want to leave the place where she had never been so close to her love.

She braced herself, pressed her abdomen to the ground, but she was very weak. The wind lifted her; she held to the earth of her birth only by the long thread woven during her ascent. It broke and she was hurled into the air. She rose, rose… She drew closer than ever to the sun! Ah! If only she had let go sooner! She rose toward him! She soared, continuing to unwind her thread, filled with the warmth of his love that grew even stronger, frozen to the blood by a terrible cold. The warmth filled her with joy! The mortal cold stiffened her limbs.

She rose, rose, consuming herself. What did it matter! She cried out in happiness and died in ecstasy.

At the moment when her love reached its peak, the thread she had woven became like an incandescent lightning bolt. The charred debris of her body fell back into the desert plain, far below. The wind scattered her ashes, which fertilized the soil.

The sun rose and set many times; one morning, it saw that from the ashes of the little spider Anansi, shoots had emerged. It warmed them with the rays of its love so they would grow. It gave them so much strength that they spread across the earth.

These shoots became plants, then trees. These trees became forests. In these forests appeared animals, then humans. And you and I and each of us, we all descend from the little spider Anansi.

The world is our vast web. Wherever we go on the web of this world, may love lead us there!

And there will always be threads we must know how to grasp and others we must know how to release…”

Do you love tales?
