I’m Warren Shanti, a handpan musician and teacher based in Germany: I discovered the handpan on YouTube in 2012, dreamed about it for nearly ten years before getting my first instrument in January 2021, and now teach it online and in workshops (my journey in detail). Here are some concrete benchmarks, without any magic promises.

The essentials

A few hours are enough to produce beautiful sounds and play a first simple melody.

To play with ease, count on a few months of regular practice instead.

A few minutes almost every day is worth more than one long, isolated session.

Structured guidance helps you avoid picking up bad habits.

You never finish learning: the handpan is refined over a lifetime.

How long does it take to play your first notes?

A few hours are enough, and sometimes even the first session. A handpan is a melodic steel percussion instrument: all its notes are tuned to the same scale (a scale is a set of notes chosen to sound good together). So there’s no fear of hitting a wrong note, and you can play a first rhythm and melody very quickly. If you want to understand the instrument before getting started, I’ve written an article on what a handpan is.

How long to play with ease?

Count on a few months of regular practice. These are indicative benchmarks; everyone progresses at their own pace, depending on the time they dedicate to the instrument and their familiarity with rhythm.

Stage

Indicative duration

What you can do

First sounds

A few hours

Produce clear sounds, play a simple rhythm and a first melody

The basics

First few weeks

Position your hands, refine your touch, coordinate both hands

Fluency

A few months

Play several pieces in a row and start improvising with pleasure

Refinement

A lifetime

Work on nuances, dynamics, listening, and your own style

The table above is my way of summarizing progression; it isn’t based on any study: it’s a teacher’s benchmark, not a rule.

What really makes you progress faster?

Three things matter more than anything: consistency, slowness, and listening. Ten to fifteen minutes almost every day builds hand memory much more reliably than a long, isolated session. Playing slowly allows you to establish the right movement before speeding up. Recording your playing with your phone and listening back shows you what your ears don’t catch in the moment.

The handpan is an instrument played by touch: hand position, finger flexibility, and rhythmic consistency make the difference between a sound that opens up and one that stays closed. It’s precisely on these details that an outside perspective saves time.

Do I need a course or a workshop to learn faster?

It’s not mandatory, but guidance prevents you from getting stuck in bad hand habits. My online school, The Handpan Paradise, gives you a framework to practice at your own pace, and the Learn Handpan page helps you choose your path.

A two or three-day workshop condenses a lot of practice into a short time. The next workshops for beginners are in Bioncourt, near Nancy, from December 11 to 13, 2026, then at Moulin d’Ozon, in Ardèche, from December 18 to 20, 2026. You can find all the dates in the immersive workshop calendar.

And if you just want to chat with other players, the free community The Handpan Paradise Family is there for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I play each day?

Ten to fifteen minutes almost every day is a good starting point. A short, regular session is better than an hour once a week.

Can I learn the handpan on my own?

Yes, you can produce beautiful sounds on your own. The risk is unconsciously fixing a bad hand position. A course or workshop allows for early correction.

What should I do if I feel like I’m no longer progressing?

Go back to simple rhythms, play slower, and record yourself. Changing pieces or getting an outside opinion often unblocks the situation.

Do you ever finish learning the handpan?

No, and that’s a good thing. You pass the first stages quickly, then you refine your touch, your listening, and your style throughout your practice.

And now, where to start?

Put your hands on the instrument today, for just ten minutes, and do it again tomorrow. When you want to go further, join me in the online school or at a workshop.

Discover how to learn the handpan with me

A few hours are enough for your first notes, and a few months to play with ease.
