Mystical Steel
Heart and passion at the service of craftsmanship
In the heart of the Dordogne, Vince McConwell has been imagining and shaping Mystical Steel handpans, formerly known as Myst, since 2017.
Coming from a family of artisans and artists, he grew up in a world where working with materials, sculpture, and creation held an essential place. After several years spent abroad and a first career in animation studios, notably in Canada where he participated in the production of the film The Little Prince, Vince chose to return to a more instinctive, concrete, and deeply human form of expression: metalwork and the quest for sound.
But before becoming a maker, Vince was already a musician and handpan player. He didn’t enter this world solely through craftsmanship: he first discovered and experienced it from the inside, as an enthusiast, artist, and active member of the community.
Since his beginnings, he has been fully invested in the handpan community, participating in numerous gatherings and helping to keep this culture alive far beyond his own workshop. He notably served as the official photographer for many events and festivals dedicated to the handpan, immortalizing the performances, encounters, and emotions that make these moments so special. Through his lens, he has photographed some of the greatest handpan players on the international scene.
This proximity to artists and musicians has allowed him to develop a particularly fine understanding of the instrument: its musical possibilities, of course, but also the very different expectations, sensitivities, and needs of those who play it.
His commitment is also expressed through another project entirely dedicated to this universe: his shop for clothing and goodies inspired by the handpan, “PanHub”. Vince has already imagined a multitude of designs addressing very varied subjects, moods, and sensitivities, but always linked by the same common thread: the Love of the handpan, its culture, and the community surrounding it. A different, creative, and often personality-filled way to wear and share this passion every day.
The birth of his first handpan is the result of eleven months of daily research, experimentation, and perseverance. Eleven months of observing, listening, shaping, starting over, understanding the reactions of the steel, and refining every movement until he succeeded in bringing his first instrument to life.
Since then, Vince has never stopped deepening his expertise. Each year of experience feeds a permanent quest for evolution: improving the quality and treatment of the steel, perfecting his shaping techniques, refining the accuracy and stability of the notes, balancing harmonics, and constantly exploring new acoustic possibilities.
Making a handpan requires an extremely fine knowledge of the metal. Every strike transforms the material and influences the response of the entire instrument. One must then know how to listen, feel, correct, and adjust with great precision to find the right balance between the fundamental of each note, its harmonics, its resonance, and its interaction with all other sound fields.
This work does not rely solely on mastering a technique. It requires time, patience, intuition, and a deeply sensitive quality of listening. Vince puts all his heart, passion, and dedication into each instrument, with the desire to create much more than a beautiful object or a perfectly tuned instrument: a living, inspiring handpan carrying a true sonic personality, a soul.
Entirely handcrafted, Mystical Steel handpans are distinguished by the depth of their sound, their harmonic richness, and their balanced resonance. Each note is crafted with extreme precision to achieve a subtle balance between clarity, warmth, power, and sensitivity. In the musician’s hands, the instrument reveals a vast palette of emotions and responds with finesse, from the most delicate touch to the most dynamic playing.
Always striving for perfection, Vince evolves his creations through his research, discoveries, encounters, and feedback from musicians. No instrument is viewed as a simple reproduction of the previous one. Each handpan is a unique piece, designed according to the chosen scale, the sensitivity of its future owner, and the musical universe they wish to explore.
Ordering a Mystical Steel means participating in the birth of a deeply personal instrument, designed to durably accompany an artistic, meditative, or intuitive journey.
This attention extends far beyond manufacturing. Vince places essential importance on listening, support, and the satisfaction of each person who entrusts him with their project. He takes the time to understand their desires, level, touch, budget, and the musical direction they wish to take in order to guide them toward a truly suitable instrument.
For those who wish to preserve their instrument over time, Vince also offers, as an option with his handpans, a lifetime retuning service. A commitment that testifies to his desire to durably support musicians and remain present long after the instrument is delivered.
He is also among the very few makers in the world who agree to retune handpans from any maker and any origin. This approach is particularly close to his heart: no musician should be left without a solution simply because the original maker is no longer in business, is too far away, cannot take care of their instrument, or even if it comes from a 100% robotic foreign factory. When technically possible, Vince puts his experience and expertise at the service of all handpans, so that no player is penalized by an out-of-tune instrument.
This search for uniqueness extends to the aesthetics of each creation thanks to the work of Marion, Vince’s partner. Through a meticulous technique akin to true metal tattooing, she hand-crafts personalized engravings inspired by the desires, symbols, and history of each musician.
This personalization can be chosen as an option when ordering a handpan from Vince, transforming the instrument into an even more intimate and singular work.
Marion also offers her art on handpans from other makers. Mandalas, sacred geometry, organic patterns, personal symbols, or entirely original creations: each engraving is imagined as an encounter between sound, metal, and the owner’s identity.
But our bond with Vince goes far beyond a professional collaboration. From our very first meeting a few years ago, something obvious took hold. It felt less like a new acquaintance and more like a reunion, as if our paths had already crossed somewhere and were simply joining again.
Over time, this inexplicable connection has become a deep Friendship, nourished by common values, a shared sensitivity, and a shared vision of music and the handpan.
From our friendship, Alchemyst Handpan was born—our musical duo. A project that brings our two worlds together and in which our sensitivities respond to, complement, and transform each other. Through our handpans, we create a living dialogue made of listening, improvisation, vibrations, and emotions.
The name Alchemyst evokes precisely this alchemy: that of two friends, two artists, and two paths meeting to give birth to a new expression. An intuitive music where it’s not just about playing together, but about feeling, sharing, and letting something emerge that goes beyond us.
Mystical Steel is thus much more than a manufacturing workshop. It is a universe where technical excellence meets passion and creativity, where metal becomes vibration, and where each instrument carries a story.
Vince is a true sound artisan, driven by passion, precision, and a constant desire to evolve his art. A deeply human person, available and attentive, who puts all his energy into the quality of his instruments as well as the relationship with those who place their trust in him.
He will hear your desires, support you with sincerity, and bring to life an instrument that lives up to your most beautiful musical project.
Far more than a professional partner, Vince is my best friend, my brother at heart, and a precious companion on my musical journey.
