The two inner wolves: a Native American tale

Here is the Native American tale of the two inner wolves, a simple Cherokee story about the battle every human being fights. I’ll let you discover it and tell me what it evokes for you.

The tale of the two wolves

One morning, an old Cherokee sees his grandson angry after an argument with his best friend. He comes to him and tells him a story—the story of an ordinary battle, one that every human being on Earth fights.

“Sometimes,” he says, “I also feel hatred toward those who behave badly. This anger doesn’t hurt my enemy, and it exhausts me. It’s like swallowing poison and wishing your adversary would die from it. I’ve often fought this feeling. In fact, a constant battle takes place every day inside me. Between two wolves.“

“Two wolves, grandfather?“

“Yes, two wolves. One is evil. He knows only anger, envy, jealousy, sadness, sorrow, greed, arrogance. Self-pity and a sense of inferiority drive him to resentment, lies, and vanity. The other is good. He knows peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

Intrigued, the grandson thinks and asks:

“In the end, grandfather, which wolf wins this battle?“

Immediately, the old Cherokee turns to his grandson, looks him in the eyes, and answers:

“The one you feed. The one you choose to feed.” 🐺✨

Which wolf do you choose to feed?

And you, which of these two wolves do you decide to feed? What if, from now on, you decided to only feed the one that makes you happy and brings you joy every day?

I love saying it, thinking it, and living it: happiness is a choice. Since I made that choice, my entire life and my vision of the world have completely changed, for the better.
