Native American wisdom: living without fear of death

Warren Shanti
17/05/2020

I’m sharing with you a text of Native American wisdom that strongly resonates with me: an invitation to live fully, with gratitude and respect, so that the fear of death can never reach your heart.

The Text

“Live your life so that the fear of death can never reach your heart.

Do not quarrel with anyone about their religion. Respect others and their viewpoints, and ask that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect it. Beautify everything in your life.

Try to make it long and in service to your people. Prepare a noble song for the day you pass into the beyond.

Always have a word or sign of greeting for a friend you meet or pass, or even for a stranger in an isolated place. Show respect to all and bow down before no one.

When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies with you alone.

Abuse no one and nothing, for abuse turns the wise into fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When the time comes to die, do not be like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, who when their time comes, weep and pray for a little more time to relive their lives differently.

When the day comes, sing your death song and die like a hero returning home.”

What about you?

Does this text speak to you? What do you give thanks for every morning? I can’t wait to read you.
