Today I want to share a Native American legend that I really loved, discovered in the book L’héritage spirituel amérindien: the legend of the creation of the stars, or how the Sun, the Moon, and the stars were born according to Native American tradition.
The legend of the creation of the stars
After the creation of the Great Island on the back of the great turtle, the animals, gathered in council, decided that more light was needed.
They then tasked Little Turtle with finding a solution to this problem of darkness. Clever as she was, Little Turtle seized great bolts of lightning and made a great fire that she set in the sky. And so the Sun was created. ☀️
Before long, the council realized that not all parts of the Great Island were well lit.
After deep reflection, the council decided to give the Sun movement. The Marsh Turtle was tasked with digging a hole straight through the Great Island so that the Sun could make a full rotation around the Great Island, creating an alternation of light and darkness. And so day and night were created.
To avoid total darkness during the Sun’s rotation, Little Turtle was asked to find a substitute for the sun to light up the night. So she created the Moon 🌔, which became the Sun’s gentle companion. The Sun and the Moon had many children, the Stars ✨, who are gifted with life and spirit like their parents. In memory of her role in the creation of the stars, Little Turtle was named guardian of the sky. 🐢✨
